Does America Really Want to Win The Environmental Battle?

Climate change is happening all around us.   The fires in NYS and NYC are reminders that climate change is more and more a daily reality.  Recently,  floods in the South devastated towns.  My husband and I had been to the Smokey’s and Asheville and were stunned by the damage.  The lives lost are tragic and heartbreaking.

Growing up there were school programs and events centered around environmental causes and issues.  School children are educated on  these issues, corporations are bound to compliance by law as are average citizens.   We have to recycle and sort out our waste for pickup or be fined.

Everyone understands the issues related to preserving and protecting our earth.  Awareness has never been an issue.  So why did matters get worse?  Why is it getting worse?

Solutions  that are typically found are also a way to make money.  Historically, they are profit  driven.  Electric cars are a status symbol as well as “clean energy”.  The monthly cost of an electric car is typically $840 dollars.  Far above the affordability factor for most working people.  So while US automakers spent significant amounts of money on developing electric cars, Tesla (luxury and prestige brand) led the pack in sales.   Electric cars are not practical for most people.

Electric cars and fire risk are not often mentioned.  Environmental flooding exposed fire risk.  Car accidents involving electric vehicles also present fire risk.  These fires are dangerous and hard to extinguish.  Electric bicycles have caused house fires and death.

There is a movement in rural areas for windmill installation on farmland despite the fact that windmills actually do not produce significant energy gains and savings.  So why the push?

Well, significant amounts of money have been put into development.  For investors, there must be a return.

There has been almost nothing in the news about the Wind Turbine disaster on Martha’s Vineyard or the death of sea life and eagles associated with them in other areas.   In fact, this “clean energy” was the single factor in creating a massive ecological disaster on Martha’s Vineyard that would not have happened if they were not installed.  Again, this is just one instance and many, many more exist.  They are rarely in the news.

Wind turbines destroy habitats, change weather patterns and they are not biodegradable.   They are noisy, drive away local wildlife and they provide little real energy.

Facts are ignored and ineffective and dangerous options are being pushed and promoted because there has to be a return on investment.  Environmental risks and damage will be ignored and Mother Earth, her humans and wildlife will suffer under the guise of progress.

What happened to solar energy?  Well, wealthy people use and install solar panels.  There are high up front costs.  Typically, it is weather dependent as well and you need a lot of space for the panels.  Electric companies make little profit when people use solar energy. If more people had solar energy, electric companies would be forced to lower rates.

Presently, electricity is promoted as a means of heat and “clean energy”. Electric companies control the rate they charge. They  can make capital expense collections.   This means that if they spend $100,000 on improvements, they can collect that back from their consumers.   Accordingly, rates would be raised.

Consumers have little to no choice in regard to electric companies or providers they can choose. There is one local provider in most cases. This means they basically have to pay whatever rate they are charged. Electric rates are astronomical.   Consumers are being gouged as this energy is promoted as “clean energy”.   It is not clean energy as fossil fuels must be used to run these systems and plants.

Are environmental concerns really being addressed if they are profit driven? I think the answer is an obvious no.  Floods, fires, mud slides, weather changes, loss of life, skyrocketing electric rates, “clean energy” disasters and the constant loss of human life, plant life and wildlife tells us no.  Yet, these facts are ignored.

America has always been a leader and the greatest country in the world.  However, America, who has the greatest capacity and largest amount of capital available to solve climate problems, has largely ignored the fact that solutions have been profit driven.

Solutions to climate change will be found when the focus becomes the desire to protect and preserve human life, wildlife, plant life and on Mother Earth.

All life as we know it will cease to exist until our focus returns to a simple fact, life must be placed before profit.  In a country that is competitive and focused on winning, we are losing this race
