Tonight I walked to the meadow and was surprised to see that there were seven deer there. They looked at me, unafraid and curious. The dog was on his lead and pulled to see them. We interrupted their meeting. The dog and I stood still to watch them at the edge of the meadow. They paused another moment to gaze at us and then three gracefully bounced away through the meadow to the east. In another moment the remaining four took off in the other direction. We watched their white tails bouncing through the field to the wooded area.
It’s moments like this that humble me. To be in the midst of their beauty, I’m honored. I’m a little overwhelmed by the feelings they invoke. My favorite place is here. The journey to here doesn’t seem like a long one. How many nice memories, funny ones, loving ones. At the core of them, goodness. Those extended hands, loving, willing to help, to give, kinship.
Where are you, I whisper into the silence of the meadow. In your heart, in your kindness, in your good deeds they echo back. The seasons change, the reasons do not. Carry prayers of love, gratitude, friendship and kindness. That’s how to remember and honor those who left their imprints on our hearts.
