I’m feeling a little overwhelmed, but happy. The last few weeks have been a blur of activity. The other day I was asked to fill in for someone who couldn’t keep their volunteer commitment. I said yes and went on my way to fill-in. When I got to the center, I found out that I would be helping at the food bank. The center was very busy because it was preparing for the holiday weekend when they would be closed.

People would need extra food. I was in charge of filling orders, preparing them and handing them out. As I worked and the clients came in for food, we chatted. So many wonderful people. The day went by quickly. I really like people, I really like helping, I really like creating.

The day went by quickly. I had great conversation with the people there. We talked, connected, shared stories and laughs. Later the center manager thanked me. I appreciate the fact that you talked to the people she said. What? I was confused. Yes, she said, sometimes people come here but they don’t talk to other people.

Disconnects are real. People no longer understand how to share or connect in meaningful ways. Technology erases real connection. NYC can desensitize us. People build walls.

Joy and happiness are priorities. We need to remember that, I need to remember that. This comes from meaningful interactions based on kindness and love. Connect to know others, help each other, find purpose in sharing and in helping others. Let’s get together in good ways.
