Today, I was reminded that kindness isn’t always received the way we expect it to be.
I found myself in the middle of an unexpected moment, one where something as simple as encouraging kindness sparked frustration instead of understanding.
Not because kindness lacks value, but because sometimes people are carrying more than we can see and often more than they are able to acknowledge.
We offer kindness because we hope to shape the world in a way that we still believe is possible.
In a world where most things are transactional, to some, kindness can seem suspicious.
Many people expect something from others or are focused on projecting their viewpoints onto others. They have forgotten how to connect and forgotten about how to build community.
Kindness is not a trade-off, it’s not, what will I get back. Kindness is not something to be measured or kept track of. It’s something that we should give freely because it makes the world a better place.
When we are kind to others, even people we don’t know, we are demonstrating connection and empathy. We’re acknowledging that there is something bigger than ourselves. Kindess can seem corny or naïve to some, but in reality it restores our humanity. It’s harder to stay open then to build walls and shut people out.
Kindness asks for nothing and maybe that’s what triggers others. We talk a lot about kindness, but we don’t always talk about people’s ability to receive it.
A small gesture can seem unfamiliar and even uncomfortable to some. Maybe people are tired or overwhelmed or they’ve been hurt. That’s exactly why it matters. It’s exactly why we need to be kind without reason
We don’t need grand gestures to be happy. We need small reminders that good people still care. Maybe kindness is how we find our way back to each other. Kindness doesn’t need a reason to be shared, it’s only asking that we be willing to begin.
